GREENWICH — A fast-moving blaze caused significant damage to a backcountry home Wednesday evening, according to fire officials.

No one was injured in the blaze, which was reported around 6:45 p.m. in the home on the 30 block of Meeting House Road, the fire department said. A number of 911 calls were made to the dispatch center about the fire, which was highly visible.

Upon arrival, firefighters found a “large volume of exterior fire” at the structure, according to the fire department. All of the occupants of the house were outside when firefighters arrived.

The operation required tanker trucks carrying water to combat the blaze, due to the absence of nearby pressurized hydrants.

“This is one of those sections of town where we don’t have hydrants available,” Deputy Fire Chief Thomas Zack said. Water from a pool on the property, as well as a small body of water equipped with pipes on Carrington Drive, was used to battle the blaze, he said.

Tanker trucks from the Round Hill, Cos Cob, and Banksville, N.Y., stations were also called in for assistance, Zack said.

The cause of the fire was not initially released.

Firefighters managed to prevent the blaze from damaging much of the interior of the house, but heat and smoke damage were present throughout the structure, Zack said.
