GREENWICH — A lightning strike caused a roof fire at a office building at 100 West Putnam Ave. Sunday morning. Firefighters believe the strike happened around 1 a.m. “It had been smoldering for a while overnight,” Deputy Fire Chief Brian Koczak said. About 25 firefighters responded to an activated fire alarm around 7:25 a.m. They noticed smoke while investigating and cut away layers of the roof to extinguish the flames, he said. A 10-by-10 foot area of the roof was damaged from the flames and an unoccupied office on the third floor has water damage, Koczak said. Strong wind gusts added a challenge to the firefighters. “It wasn’t terrible but high winds helped fan the flames,” Koczak said. There were no injuries.
