GREENWICH — A fire caused extensive damage to a home on Riverdale Avenue in the Pemberwick section of town early Friday morning.

No one was injured during the fire, which tore through the upper level of the two-family house.

“The fire started in the rear of the building, unknown reason at this point,” said Deputy Chief Keith Millette, “It ended up in the roof.”

The fire started around 2 a.m., and calls from neighbors reported flames shooting from the roof.

An extensive response from professional firefighters, as well as volunteers from across town, brought numerous trucks and equipment to the site. Firefighters were there until 8:30 a.m.

The Red Cross was sheltering three people displaced from the blaze as of Friday afternoon, and offering other social services. There was a report from Red Cross staff that a cat woke up the family and alerted them to the danger, according to Mary Young, the chief operating officer of the regional Red Cross.

The Greenwich Fire Department responded to two other fires in the community on Thursday.
